March Madness Day 1 Recap

Filed under: Uncategorized — loudounlady @ 5:28 pm

With the first day of March Madness officially over, I thought it would be beneficial to my readers to provide a recap of the days.

Despite the first day lacking in any major upsets, the first day did provide basketball fans with several exciting and down to the wire games.  The most intriguing game for me was obviously the VCU, UCLA game.  This was without a doubt, the best game of the first day.

Going into half Virginia Commonwealth was trailing 35-25, UCLA’s guard play was outstanding and VCU appeared a little sluggish.  Coming out in the second half, the Commonwealth appeared to pick up an extra gear in the lockeroom and outscored the Bruins 39-30 in the half.  Despite VCU’s excellent second half, the Bruins proved too much of a formidable foe and topped the Commonwealth 65-64.

Another game which caught my attention was the Memphis, Cal State Northridge game.  This game was close until about 3 minutes left in the second half.  The Cal State boys went punch for punch with one of the nation’s best.  Memphis’ defense, which many thought to be the best in the nation, showed problem covering defenders off the dribble.  Despite their poor defensive performance, the Tigers topped Cal. State 81-70.

There were only three games in which the higher seed topped their opponent, the Maryland vs. California game, Michigan vs. Clemson game, and Western Kentucky vs. Illinois game.
